[Financial News = Sang-il Jeon] It’s been five years and six months since South Korea played Mexico in Europe. But they’ve made the best of a bad situation.

Jürgen Klinsmann’s South Korean national football team’s second opponent for their September away A-match has been confirmed as Saudi Arabia.

“It’s not easy to find a European team for the second match in September,” said an official from the Korea Football Association on Tuesday, adding, “We are preparing to play Saudi Arabia as the next best option. We haven’t signed the contract yet, but it’s practically a done deal.”

The KFA had initially agreed to play Wales and Mexico in England as part of its preparations for two away A matches in September.

Accordingly, Klinsmann’s men will play the first of the trials against the Welsh national team at Cardiff Stadium in Wales on 8 September at 3:45 a.m. KST. The next game was scheduled for Saudi Arabia, but on September 4, Mexico abruptly asked the KFA and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to suspend the negotiations, citing TV time, and cancelled all dates.

The federation has been scrambling to find a second A-match opponent, but with the European Football Championship 2024 (Euro 2024) qualifiers taking place during the September A-match (4-12 September), it was virtually impossible to find a European team. There were no alternatives outside of North and Central America, and as a result, the Football Association is moving forward with the next best option, which is to play in Saudi Arabia and England, which, like us, have scheduling conflicts with Mexico. This is in the best interests of South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

The date of the match will be 12 September local time. The venue and time are still to be negotiated.

South Korea will compete against Jordan, Bahrain and Malaysia in Group E of the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar, next January. The national team will also begin the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in November.

They will face China, Thailand and the winner of the Singapore-Guam first qualifier. With the Asian Cup next January and the second round of World Cup qualifiers starting in November, it’s not a bad way to prepare for the Middle East. Saudi Arabia defeated Messi’s Argentina 2-1 at the last World Cup in Qatar. The only loss for the champions was to Saudi Arabia, so it’s a good test.

With no Middle Eastern opponents scheduled ahead of the World Cup qualifiers and Asian Cup, Klinsmann believes it’s not a bad idea to get some experience against the Saudis in September.

In addition, Korea is also planning to play Vietnam in the two October A matches (9-17 October) at home. In Klinsmann’s opinion, Korea needs to practice against a team that can play ten-back before the Asian Cup.
